Inman Perk Gainesville welcomes the piano genius of Kunal Lahiry
September 11, 2009!
Last Thanksgiving, a baby grand piano wandered it’s way into the Gainesville Inman Perk – Kunal followed shortly after. The patrons of the Perk have long since joked that it was like a moth to the flame. But there is no bugging in this analogy, as all of us have been delighted to listen in to his “practices.” Come find out for yourself what you’ve been missing and listen in on one of Gainesville’s true talents as Kunal gives us a send off performance!
More about Kunal Lahiry:
Kunal has been studying piano for eight years and has been a member of the Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony since his freshman year. Lahiry has studied piano under Judy Thomas, Eugene Barban, Walter Hautzig, Andre Laplante, and Elizabeth Pridonoff of the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, and is currently under the tutelage of Edith Schiff.
His most significant accomplishments have been placing first in the Georgia Music Teachers Association state piano competition for two years, placing third in the Brevard Music Center Piano Competition, and recently making his debut with the Gainesville Symphony Orchestra, performing a Mozart concerto. Recently, Lahiry won the opportunity to perform in a masterclass with Claude Frank, professor of piano at the Yale School of Music and Curtis Institute of Music, which will take place in November. Lahiry spends much of his time dedicated to school-related activities, including serving as coeditor of the school newspaper, team captain of the mock trial team, and president of National Law Society.
He is the founder and president of the activist club SA VE (Students Against Victims Everywhere) at his high school, and works as a parttime piano teacher, accompanist, and performer. He plans to double major in political science and piano performance, eventually pursuing either law school or a conservatory of music for graduate studies.

Inman Perk Gainesville welcomes the artistic stylings of Patti Russell for the month of August.
From Patti Russel:
My artistic style is “expressionistic”. I do not strive to make a sunflower look just like the real flower but rather my “feeling of the flower and its attitude” at that particular time. If I am painting a landscape I don’t copy my photo reference, but rather I use several photos – taking the sky from one, the land from another, a tree from another, and then putting all the photos aside – finishing the painting in whatever way it seems to work best for me. Thus my landscape paintings are not of a specific place – but a place in my mind that is totally unique.
